Depression Therapy

Depression Counseling

  • Do you find it takes a great deal of effort to get out of bed in the morning?
  • Are you tired all day but unable to sleep at night?
  • Do you have trouble completing tasks because you can’t focus?
  • Are you irritable?
  • Do you no longer enjoy the things that used to give you pleasure?
  • Have you withdrawn from friends and loved ones?
  • Do you feel hopeless and that life is too much effort?

If you feel lost, hopeless, isolated and overwhelmed you may be suffering from depression. We all experience sadness, days when we feel down and lack motivation. But if persistent sadness lasts more than 2 weeks and you find it difficult to perform your daily tasks then counseling can help. Toughing it out or trying to snap out of it does not work for depression. In fact, repressing or holding feelings in often makes depression worse.

Depression can result from a single major traumatic or stressful event in your life or may develop over a lifetime from numerous disappointments and problems. Even an event that is typically viewed as joyful, such as the birth of a child, can lead to depression (see information on postpartum depression below).

Counseling for depression does make a difference. In fact, it can be more helpful than medication. If you think or know you are depressed, our therapists can help. In sessions, we will get to the bottom of the things that are contributing to and causing your depression so you can start to heal.

  • Effectively deal with tough situations and difficult people.

You will regain a sense of hope and restore your ability to experience happiness in your life.

You need not suffer endlessly. Relief is waiting for you!

Postpartum Depression

  • Has your pregnancy or the birth of your child brought you sadness instead of joy?
  • Are you anxious? Have you been crying?
  • Are things different than you expected as a new mom?
  • Did things change after you became a new mom?

If so, you should seek professional help to determine if you have postpartum or perinatal depression. (Perinatal depression refers to depression experienced during pregnancy and up to a year after the birth of the child). Postpartum depression and perinatal depression are often caused by hormonal changes due to pregnancy.

You Can Take Back Control

While postpartum depression often includes profound sadness and crying, sometimes severe anxiety may be the main symptom. The mother may be plagued with persistent doubts about her ability to care for the baby. Trouble concentrating, making decisions and difficulty bonding with the baby are common signs. This may also be complicated by intrusive thoughts about hurting herself or the baby. Understandably, this can be very disturbing to the mother.

Members of our team have been certified by Postpartum Support International in assessing and providing counseling for perinatal depression and can help you if you know or suspect that you have postpartum depression. Proper medical care, supportive counseling and education about perinatal or postpartum depression for the mother and those closest to the mother are all important parts of treatment.

If you are suffering from perinatal or postpartum depression you need to remember:

It’s not your fault.
There is help.
With help, you will get better.
